Plumber in Kogarah Bay

The suburb was carved off old Kogarah, whose name comes from a word for a place of reeds, and it runs from the Princes Highway ridge down to the bay's northern shore. That fall from ridge to water decides how the drainage behaves.

Downhill drain runs. Streets like Bayview and Glenview step down to Wharf Road, so sewer and stormwater cross stepped, retained blocks and silt or scour wherever the grade changes.

Furring galvanised mains. The interwar and post-war brick homes commonly still run original galvanised water services that corrode from the inside and choke the pressure at the tap.

Cracked earthenware sewers. The lines serving the older brick-veneer and double-brick homes are largely first-generation earthenware, now split and root-bound at the joints.

Bursts under the driveway. Corroded galvanised mains on the sloping blocks give way suddenly, often beneath a concrete drive where the first sign is water welling up from below.

Nearer the foreshore at Parkside Drive, salt in the estuarine air adds to it, pitting outdoor copper, valves and unit casings and shortening the life of the aged storage hot water systems the suburb is full of.
